Ayurvedic Travel Tips

An Ayurvedic Approach to Stay Healthy when Traveling

Whether you travel by air, land, or visit loved ones for the weekend, Vata dosha will always be affected, even if it’s Summer, where Pitta’s qualities are more present. I share practices to do before, during, and after travel to keep your system in balance, especially digestion, sleep, and regularity.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, it's important to stay grounded, nourished, and aligned with your natural rhythms. By incorporating these Ayurvedic practices into your travel routine, you can support your body and mind through the changes and challenges of travel. Whether you're flying across the globe or just a few hours away, these tips will help you arrive at your destination feeling balanced, refreshed, and ready to enjoy your journey.

Ground Yourself with Oil Massage: Travel, especially flying, can aggravate Vata dosha, leading to feelings of dryness, anxiety, or low energy. To counteract this, give yourself a gentle warm oil massage (abhyanga) before and after your flight. This practice helps ground your energy, calm your mind, and keep your skin moisturized.

Always travel with Ghee Butter: You can add it to Travel - Size - Toiletry bottles. They will think it is cosmetics 🙂 Have a cup of warm water or herbal tea with good quality cultured ghee before your flight or long travel. When on plane or road squeeze 1 tsp of ghee in your warm drinks. It will help with digestion, energy, sleep and regularity.

Support Your Digestion with Spices: Traveling can disrupt your digestive fire (agni), leading to indigestion or irregular bowel movements. Carry a small travel spice mix to sprinkle on your meals. A combination of cumin, coriander, and fennel works well to keep your digestion strong and balanced. Travel with hibiscus and rose in the Summer to keep you cool. Drink a cup of Seasonal Digestive tea 30 minutes after eating to optimize digestion. You can make your own, see instructions here, or get Joyful Heart tea.  Traveling with toasted ajwain and fennel seeds can help with a lot of problems. It saves a lot of digestive discomfort. Ajwain: It kills 8 strains of bacteria, including e-coli and also helps with viral infections. It is pungent, helps with food poisoning, or if you ate something and it is sitting in your stomach.

Agni Sliders: Agni Sliders are especially helpful when you’re eating away from home, where foods might not be your usual choices. They help prepare your digestive system to handle unfamiliar or heavier dishes while keeping your energy stable. You can chew on a piece of fresh ginger, with a pinch of sea salt and a squeeze of lime, or just ginger,  before meals to stimulate your appetite and aid circulation.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Air travel can be dehydrating, and changing time zones can disrupt your digestive rhythm. To stay balanced, drink plenty of warm water throughout your journey. You can also sip on herbal teas like ginger or fennel to support digestion and prevent bloating and constipation. Carry light, easy-to-digest food options. e.g, raw almonds and dates are high in Ojas.

Sync with the Local Time: When crossing time zones, try to align your activities with the local time as soon as you arrive. Eat your meals according to the new schedule, and watch the sunrise and sunset outdoors to help reset your internal clock. If you arrive during the day, take a brisk walk outside to help your body adjust. If it’s night, practice a calming routine with herbal tea and light stretching before bed to encourage restful sleep.
